Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education in collaboration with the University of the West Indies (Mona) - full and part-time


This Programme prepares Early Childhood Development professionals to work and experiment with best pratices and processes from which will emerge learning experiences which are developmentally appropriate for children from birth to eight years of age.

It provides Jamaica and the other English speaking Caribbean countries with the necessary links to the Governments' support for Early Childhood Development.

Programme Structure

The degree is a full-time or part-time programme of at least 66 credits with three components:

Applicants who satisfy the entry requirements may transfer a maximum of thirty (30) credits from the Diploma in Teaching. The core courses include:

The general academic and foundation courses are done at the University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI), while the professional courses are conducted at Shortwood Teachers’ College (STC). Transportation is provided to and from the University for students who live on the Shortwood campus.

Entry Requirements

  1. Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood) from a recognized institution. However, applicants with work experience in Early Childhood Education who possess teacher training in Primary Education, may also be given consideration on a case by case basis.
  2. Successful completion of two pre-requisite courses offered by the College during the summer.
  3. In addition, applicants will need to meet the matriculation requirements of UWI.
