The College offers training for the Three-Year Diploma programme in Teaching. There are three levels of Teacher Preparation:
- Early Childhood Education
- Secondary Education
- Primary Spanish Education
General Entry Requirements
General entry requirements are five (5) subjects, including English Language at the CXC General Proficiency Level, Grade I or II (or Grade III obtained in 1998 and since), or subjects at the GCE 'O' level, Grade A, B, or C. Equivalent qualifications are accepted. Students applying for the Early Childhood Education programme should include Mathematics as a General Entry Requirement. Preference will be given to applicants with passes in any one or more of the following: A Science subject, Religious Education, Social Studies, History, and Visual Arts.
Students applying for the Primary Spanish programme should include Spanish at grade 1 or 2 as a General Entry Requirement. Male applicants are now being admitted to Shortwood Teachers' College. Students applying for a Secondary Education programme must have obtained a grade I or II at the CXC General Proficiency level or Grade A or B at GCE, in the areas in which they wish to specialize and three more passes. Select one of the following options:
- Language / Literature (English A & English B)
- Mathematics
- Home Economics (Clothing & Textiles, Food & Nutrition, Home Economics Management)
- Religious Education
- Choose 2 of the following: Spanish, French, English
- Choose 2 of the following: History, Geography, Social Studies
- Maths/Science
- Language / Literature (English A & English B)
- Relgious Education / Guidance
- Mathematics/Information Technology
Students with passes in A level subjects in the options in which they wish to specialize may be given exemptions where applicable.
Entry Procedures
- Obtain an application form from the link below or from the Student Affairs Office. Application fee $500.00)
- Return the completed application form to the Student Affairs Office
- Each form should be accompanied by:
- Copy of examination certificates (take original for verification)
- Copy of birth certificate (take original for verification)
- Three passport size photographs, two signed by a Justice of the Peace, Minister of Religion or Principal
- Two sealed recommendations (originals only)
- Sit test and attend interview
- You are expected to dress professionally for the test and interview
- Have medical examination done by college doctor
