Diploma in Teaching Home Economics:

This is a three (3) year programme which prepares individuals to teach Home Economics at the secondary level. A major aim of the programme is to equip student teachers with the necessary skill and content, which will enable them to prepare their students in the formal education system, to the level where they can sit the qualifying examination in these schools.

Bachelor of Education Degree in Human Ecology:

Through the Consortium of Institutions for Teacher Education (CITE), which may be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis. This 45 credit completion degree is a natural development from and easily articulates with the Diploma in Teaching. The philosophy espoused in this degree incorporates practices internationally regarded as exemplary.

The teaching approach is both learner-centered and interactive. It is intended to focus on practice and application and to encourage reflective and analytic classroom practice leading to a strengthened knowledge base.

There are five components to this Degree:

  • Specialization: courses in Human Ecology
  • Field Experience: practice related to the area of Human Ecology
  • Independent Study: reflective/action research
  • General Education: this includes a foreign language as well as communication and technology and
  • Electives: students will be required to select two from a menu of courses.

College Courses:

  • Health and Family Life Education (HFLE) includes HIV/AIDS Education, course offered to all year II students
  • Personal Development course offered to all year I students.

Professional Development Courses:

Offered through the work of one member of the ROSE team based in the department.

Definition of Programme

The three year programme prepares students to teach specified Home Economics to adolescents between the ages 12 – 17, that is from grades 7 – 11 or forms 1 -5. On completion of the second year of study, students are prepared to teach adolescents between the ages 12 – 15, that is, from grades 7-9 or forms 1 -3. Specialization in either Food Production and Management and Apparel Design and Production is done in the final year.

Requirement for admission to Diploma Programme

Following are the requirements for admission to the Diploma programme:

  1. Five CXC/GCE subjects, including English Language at the general proficiency grades 1, II & III (effective June 1998) or their equivalent. A candidate with 4 CXC/CSEC subjects at the general proficiency grades I, II & III as above, and two subjects at grade III prior to June 1998 will be deemed to have satisfied the minimum entry requirements. English Language must be obtained at the general proficiency grade 1, II or III effective 1998.
  2. Students reading Human Ecology should normally possess within the general requirement passes in their two teaching subjects at CXC/CSEC general proficiency grades I or II or GCE O’Level grades A or B or their equivalent.

Medical Examination

All successful applicants are required to do a general medical examination organized through the Students Affairs Office.

Orientation

  • The college offers a general orientation to all students for a period of 1 week. All students are required to remain in residence for the duration of the orientation period.
  • The Human Ecology Department offers orientation to its students for half day to familiarize them with the department rules, regulations, policies and responsibilities as detailed in the Handbook.
