The recruitment process for students begins with the advertisements by the College beginning in January of the preceding academic year. Advertisements state the Options offered and the qualifications needed for entry to these Options.
The next step is for the prospective students/applicants to forward their documents to the Students Affairs Office for processing preparatory to interviews being conducted with those accepted as qualified by the College. These prospective students are then required to do a piece of extended writing on a given topic, under examination conditions.
Candidates are selected for the interview based on their CXC C-SEC passes and their performance in the written examinations. Those students doing the Human Ecology programme are interviewed by members of the Department.
The interview is conducted by a panel from the Human Ecology Department. This enables them to glean information about the candidates’ proficiency in oral language use, reading habits and other course specific details. In addition to the regular questions, as indicated in the interview forms, the candidates are also provided with specific scenarios to which they must respond verbally. This enables the interviewers to detect possible attitudes to authority, the teaching-learning situation and other related aspects of the teacher’s professional life. Candidates also have to do an oral comprehension exercise. The interviewing team completes the relevant forms and returns the candidate’s file to the Students Affairs Office.
