Staff Support

Staff members who have the status of Certified JBTE Examiners are Mrs. Ethel Dixon, Mrs. Dosseth Edwards-Watson and Mrs. Marjorie James.

In addition Mrs. Ethel Dixon and Mrs. Marjorie James have been granted the status of Certified External Examiner JBTE (Teaching Practice).

Mrs. Ethel Dixon

A graduate of the College of Arts, Science and Technology with a Diploma in Technical Education-Home Economics. She has a Certificate in Marketing from the University of the West Indies, School of Continuing Studies. Mrs. Dixon obtained a B.Ed. Honours Degree in Home Economics - Foods from the University of Technology, Jamaica and a M.Sc. Degree in Education from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale with a major in Workforce Education and Development. She has twenty-eight years teaching experience, over fifteen of which have been at the tertiary level. She teaches Advanced Culinary Techniques, Culinary Techniques II and Home Economics Methods II. In addition she teaches the Quantity Food Production and Baking Technology courses offered in the Bachelor of Education Degree programme.

Mrs. Dosseth Edwards-Watson

Presently Acting Vice Principal of Administrative Affairs. She is a graduate of Shortwood Teachers’ College, with a Diploma in teaching Home Economics. She has a Diploma in Industrial Management from the University of London. Mrs. Edwards-Watson obtained a B.Ed. Honours Degree in Home Economics – Clothing and Textiles from the University of Technology, Jamaica, and a Masters in Education (Teacher Education) from the University of the West Indies and a Master of Arts Degree in Distance Education (first Division) Indira Ghandai National Open University. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Education at the University of the West Indies Mona. Mrs. Edwards-Watson has twenty years teaching experience, over eight of which have been at the tertiary level. She teaches Family Development, Textiles, Clothing Techniques I & II, Housing and Interior Design and Clothing in World Perspective. In addition she collaborates with the Visual Arts Department in teaching Practical Arts and Surface Design Course offered in the Bachelor of Education Degree programme.

Mrs. Sophia Gray-Goode

A graduate of Shortwood Teachers’ College, where she obtained a Diploma in Teaching (Home Economics). Subsequently, Mrs. Goode received a Bachelor of Education Degree (First Class Honours) from the University of Technology, Jamaica and is pending a Masters Degree in Nutrition from the University of the West Indies. She has fifteen years teaching experience, five of which is at the tertiary level. Mrs. Goode currently teaches Food Fundamentals, Personal Development and Health and Family Life Education (HFLE). In addition she teaches, Introduction to Nutrition and Community and Therapeutic Nutrition. She also teaches a course in the Bachelor of Education Degree (CITE) programme. Mrs. Goode has worked with the HEART NTA and the Overseas Examination Office and is also a member of the Jamaica Red Cross Society.

Mrs. Marjorie James

Head of Secondary Section at the Shortwood Teachers’ College with the responsibility for Teaching Practice. She holds a Masters Degree in Clothing and Textiles, a Bachelors Degree in Fashion Designing and a Trained Teacher Certificate. She is a past student of the Shortwood Teachers College. Mrs. James has been a lecturer at the college for the past twenty-seven years. Being involved in all areas of the college, she has been, Head of the Home Economics Department, staff representative to the College Board of Directors and staff representative to the Board of Directors for the Joint Board of Teacher Education to name a few. She lectures in the following courses, Introduction to Textiles, Advanced Textiles, Couture Techniques and Introduction to Tailoring. She is a member of the Lions Club of Kingston, a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, a Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer of the Jamaica Home Economics Association. She is married and has four children. She has traveled widely and loves gardening, sewing, reading and floral arrangements.

Mrs. Donna Minott

A graduate of the Shortwood Teachers’ College with a Certificate (Credit) in teaching (Science), and a Certificate in Instructor Training in Garment Construction, from the Vocational Training Development Institute. She has a Diploma (Credit) in Home Economics – Clothing & Housing, from the University of Technology, Jamaica. Mrs. Minott obtained a Bachelor of Education Degree (Honours) in Home Economics – Clothing from the University of Technology, Jamaica and a Post Diploma Certificate (Honours) in School Administration and Management from the Mico University College. She is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Teaching at the Mico University College. Mrs. Minott has over twenty-four years teaching experience, of which the last seventeen was at the Papine High School where she taught Clothing and Textiles at the CSEC level. Currently she is on secondment to the Shortwood Teachers’ College where she lectures in Apparel Construction I, Clothing Techniques II and Health and Family Life Education (HFLE).

Mrs. Andrea Searchwell

Mrs. Andrea Searchwell has been a member of the Faculty at Shortwood Teachers’ College since September 1, 2000. She holds a Master of Education in Curriculum Development from the University of the West Indies since September 2005. Mrs. Searchwell has taught Home Economics at the Secondary level for eight years prior to her employment at Shortwood Teachers’ College. Mrs. Searchwell has worked in the capacity of In-service Teacher Trainer Reform of Secondary Education Programme (R.O.S.E) and a lecturer in the Human Ecology Department. She is a member of the Professional Development Committee and the Research Committee. She is also a member of the Jamaica Home Economics Association (JHEA), the Caribbean Home Economics Association (CAHE) and the International Federation of Home Economist (IFHE). Mrs. Searchwell has interests in Floral Arrangement and has served as Adjudicator for the Skills Jamaica HEART skills competition and the JCDC Festival of Foods.

Mrs. Sharon Thomas

A graduate of the University of the West Indies where she successfully pursued a Masters Degree in Human Resource Development. She also studied at the University of Technology and Shortwood Teachers’ College where she earned a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics Education and a Diploma in teaching respectively. After leaving Shortwood Teachers’ College, Mrs. Thomas worked at Meadowbrook High School for eighteen years. At Meadowbrook she was the Chief Guide in charge of the Girl Guide Movement. She also held the position of assistant House Leader. At the community level, she is a member of the Hellshire Heights Environmental Club, Secretary of the Youth Board and Sunday School Teacher at Portmore Missionary Church where she worships. Mrs. Thomas was employed to Shortwood Teachers’ College in September 2004 as a lecturer in the Human Ecology Department where she currently teaches the following courses: Culinary Techniques I, Culinary Techniques II, Personal Development (PD) and Health and Family Life Education (HFLE). Since her employment to Shortwood Teachers’ College she has been an executive member of the Staff Association. She is also been involved in writing courses for Bachelor of Education programme. She is also the coordinator of the HFLE programme. Mrs. Thomas is a member of the Jamaica Home Economics Association (JHEA), the International Federation of Home Economist (IFHE) and the Caribbean Association of Home Economist (CAHE) the professional bodies affiliated with Home Economics. In her spear time she loves listening to music, gardening and reading.
